Embroidering Text

I am creating an embroidered piece to use under one of the embroideries on net. When I woke up yesterday morning, I knew I wanted to embroider words, the months of the year. I looked on line for transfers, but the search was long and tedious and I was tired of it before I had even begun. As it happens, I was going into town that afternoon, so I went to the craft store to look for transfers as I know they stock a lot of them. Well, there were no months of the year, not even on any pre-printed kits. I was getting more and more aggravated, but my granddaughter is here visiting and I didn't want to spend every minute of the day looking for transfers. I resolved to return home, print off the months on the computer and transfer them to the cloth. I started thinking about the best way to do the transfer, none of which appealed to me. But, as it turned out, once I got home, I had to turn around and go back to town within the hour (a twenty minute trip each way). However, on this trip, I had an IDEA! I would just draw the words on the fabric, not worrying about making neat rows and even layering them on top of each other. Fantastic. No messing about with transfers. That is exactly what I wanted to do and so I have begun.

The reason I am writing about this is because it occurs to me that this process is the often the way my pieces evolve. I start off with an idea, but I can't do it for one reason or another, and I have to come up with an alternate way of approaching it. Up against a brick wall, I have to figure out a way to get over or around it. In the end, what I come up with is more interesting then the first idea would have been. So, rejoice. Not having the supplies you think you need is just an opportunity to do something closer to your heart.

it will be fascinating to see how the text appears once parts of it are concealed by the embroidered net...hidden words, partly concealed...right up my street.

I love this post. It seems to me that when you begin that IS the word. . .when I listen to my inner voice it will lead to exactly where it should and then I am ready to BEGIN.
I remember a teacher once described his reverence for TEXT as in fonts. It has inspired me all of these years, since.
You have used text before in this way of hiding. That is one idea I love the most. I look at that every single day in the spiral piece of yours hanging on the wall.
